Carapace is a passive item added in The Mammon Update.

Effects

• Upon entering an uncleared room, Isaac gains a shell that gives +1 flat damage, a 0.75× speed multiplier, and negates the first instance of damage Isaac takes.
  • After a hit is negated, the shell is destroyed, removing the speed and damage modifier until Isaac enters a new room.

Notes

• When the shell is broken, Isaac gains 0.5 seconds of invulnerability frames.
• Unlike the shield provided by Holy Mantle, Carapace's shell will block instances of damage from health donations, such as Blood Donation Machines, Devil Beggars, File:IV Bag.png IV Bag, et cetera, allowing them to be used for free at least once.

Interactions

• Holy Mantle: Taking damage will remove the shield provided by Holy Mantle first before Carapace's.
• File:Mercurius.png Mercurius: Allows Isaac to exit and re-enter rooms with enemies to restore the shell, allowing it to be exploited for health donation.

Trivia

• Carapace is a reference to the Baulder Shell charm from the game Hollow Knight.
