False Idol is an active item added in the initial release of Retribution.

Effects

  • On use, spawns a False Idol familiar in the current room that passively grants +10.9 luck. Leaving the room will have the familiar disappear.
    • Using the item again while a False Idol familiar is already present in the room will spawn an additional familiar, granting an additional boost in luck, and spawn the False Promise.png False Promise. False Promise can only be spawned once in a run.

Notes

  • If there is somehow multiple False Idol familiars in the room, Using False Idol will have each familiar spawn their own copy of False Promise.

Interactions

  • UI CoopIcon Judas.png Judas + Birthright.png Birthright: Increases the luck boost granted by the False Idol familiar, for a total of 24.4 luck.
  • Book of Virtues.png Book of Virtues: Spawns a blue wisp that passively grants +1.09 luck. This boost stacks with multiple wisps.

False Promise

False Idol is a Passive Item added in the initial release of Retribution.

Effects

  • +1.09 luck.

Interactions

  • UI CoopIcon Judas.png Judas + Birthright.png Birthright: Boosts the luck granted by False Promise, for a total of 2.44 luck. This effect is applied retroactively while the player has the passive version of The Book of Belial, even if they had not used False Idol with The Book of Belial's effect to spawn False Promise.

Trivia

  • False Idol's appearance is a reference to the old Nicalis brand logo, while False Promise is based off of Nicalis' current logo.
  • False Idol and False Promise are both a rag on Nicalis' history of various scandals, regarding communication issues and silently breaking promises.[1]
  • The exact luck granted by the False Idol familiar and False Promise is a reference to the ARG for the UI CoopIcon Keeper.png Keeper in The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth, with the number "109" being the item ID for Money Equals Power.png Money = Power, as it had originally included a clue hidden within its sprite.
    • The term "109" is often incorrectly associated with the hidden character UI CoopIcon Lost.png The Lost added in The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, based on the myth that the unlock method for the character was found through data mining within 109 hours of the game's release — an event which later became an inspiration for the item Dataminer.png Dataminer, which has the number "109" in its flavor text.
  • The total luck granted by False Idol's interaction with the passive version of The Book of Belial.png The Book of Belial (from UI CoopIcon Judas.png Judas' Birthright.png Birthright effect) is equal to the total number of items added in Retribution, divided by 10.
    • The total luck granted by False Promise with the passive version of The Book of Belial is equal to the total number of items added in Retribution divided by 100.
    • As of the current version, False Idol acknowledges 244 items in the mod, spanning 157 items, 33 trinkets, and 54 Cursed Trinkets.
      • According to comments in the code, the item count for this interaction is intentionally exclusionary of Spiffy Timepiece Spiffy Timepiece.
