Tainted Mammon is a character added in the Burned Out update for Retribution, and is the Tainted counterpart to Mammon. Like all tainted characters, Tainted Mammon has to be unlocked by opening the secret closet in
Home as Mammon, using a
Cracked Key or
Red Key.
Abilities
Cursed Trinkets
- Tainted Mammon's main gimmick is the presence of
Cursed Trinkets. Cursed Trinkets have detrimental effects but can be exchanged for coins with a
Curse Trader.
- Cursed Trinkets can be distinguished from normal Trinkets by the black smoke they emit.
- Cursed Trinkets are immediately smelted when picked up.
- Cursed Trinkets can be found 4 ways:
- Items in the
Treasure Room are always replaced with a random Cursed Trinket.
- Completing a
Boss Room will always drop a Cursed Trinket.
- Killing the Seven Deadly Sin
Minibosses will always drop a Cursed Trinket.
- Enemies may occasionally drop a Cursed Trinket on death.
- Items in the

- Only the "main" stage of a Miniboss is guaranteed to drop a Cursed Trinket.
- Split versions of
Envy and
Super Envy may still drop Cursed Trinkets, but they must follow the rules of a normal enemy.

- In order for a
Boss Room to count as completed, at least 1 Boss enemy must be killed in the room.
- This means that successfully using
Eraser on a boss will count as skipping the room rather than completing it.
- It is technically possible to circumvent this limitation using
Vanishing Twin or
Meat Cleaver by killing one boss before erasing the other.
- Bosses that consist of multiple enemies such as
Gurglings or
Steven can also circumvent this.

- The chance for an enemy to drop a Cursed Trinket is influenced by a number of factors:
- The maxmimum health of the enemy.
- The current stage.
- The average Luck of Tainted Mammons and other players holding
Blazing Beak.
- The cumulative trinket multiplier of
Crow Mask among all players.
Trader Shops
- Tainted Mammon has stronger shops than other characters, and will always feature certain elements:
- At least 2
Shop items for sale.
- At least 2
Treasure Room items for sale.
- A
Curse Trader.
- Either a
Swine Beggar or a
Gashapon.
- At least 2
- Shops will generate in
The Womb,
Cathedral, and
Sheol for Tainted Mammon, however these shop are less powerful than normal.

Notes
- If any player holds
Silver Dollar, then Tainted Mammon's post-Depths shops will remain as strong as his normal shops.
- This trinket must be held while initially entering a stage for it to have any effect.
Miscellaneous Changes
- Tainted Mammon's
Boss Room items must be purchased for 15 coins, similarly to
Tainted Keeper.
- This does not apply to items in any other type of room like it does for Tainted Keeper.
- The first time a Tainted Mammon dies each run, so long as it hasn't already been granted
Packaged Ham will be spawned from his corpse.
- This will only occur if Tainted Mammon is able to revive, or if the current run is a Co-op game.
Birthright
"Conspicuous consumption"
- Tainted Mammon gains
Spiffy Timepiece.
- Spiffy Timepiece is a Hidden Active Item that tells you the duration of the current run.
- The
Bougie Pedestal will now appear in every shop, selling an item from the
Bougie Pedestal item pool for 25 coins.

Trivia
- Tainted Mammon's "title" is The Burnout.
- Tainted Mammon's mechanics were based on the game Blazing Beaks.
- Tainted Mammon is comphet, due to having adjusted to a more corporate mindset.
- Tainted Mammon's unlock art is a reference to the album art for In Right Now by SA-20.
- "Everything U Do" was used as the backing track for Retribution's trailer for The Burned Out Update.[1]
- Tainted Mammon was initially developed to be an entirely different character called Buta-chan, whose assets can still be found in the files.
- Buta-chan is a recurring character within Retribution, such as being referenced to in the flavor text of
Branded Bowtie.
- This change was due to it making more sense for Mammon to be a subordinate of a corporation than Buta-chan, the mascot of said company.
