Grids are obstacles whose function is mostly to block the path or define the shape of the rooms. Sometimes they can have special properties that can be utilized by either the player or the enemies or simply exist, affecting how the room itself works.

Currently, Retribution adds only one new Grid.

Rune Rocks

Rune Rocks are an unlockable Grid that can randomly replace regular rocks, similarly to how Fool's Gold works in vanilla. When blown up, Rune Rocks perform a more powerful version of the rune effect they are invoking.

  • Rune Rocks have a 1/256 base chance to spawn per room, however this can be boosted by various effects:
    • While in a Special Room (e.g. Boss Rooms, Treasure Rooms, Secret Rooms, etc), an additional 1/24 chance is added.
    • Scaling with Planetarium spawn chance, up to an additional 1/64 chance can be added.
    • Any player owning Crystal Shard Crystal Shard will double the spawn chance.
  • When a Rune Rock spawns, it has a 2/3 chance to be assigned a random rune symbol etching.
    • Etched Rune Rocks perform their ascribed effect when destroyed, while non-etched rocks perform an effect at random.
    • While in Treasure, Boss, Secret, and Ultra Secret rooms, Etched Rune Rocks have a 50% chance to specifically gain the Perthro or Jera etchings.

Interactions

  • Crystal Shard Crystal Shard: Increases the chances of Rune Rocks appearing. Equivalent to a chance multiplier of cumulativeGlobalTrinketMultiplier + 1.
    • Also causes broken Rune Rocks to spawn Rune Shard.png Rune Shards when destroyed, just as Crystal Shard does to normal Rune consumables.
  • Mom's Bracelet.png Mom's Bracelet: Rune Rocks can be lifted and carried as expected, allowing beneficial effects to be transferred to a more useful room. For example taking Jera to a Devil Deal, or Algiz to a Boss Room.
  • Clear Rune.png Clear Rune: Using Clear Rune in a room containing a Rune Rock will mimic the effect of the Rune Rock.
    • This does not prevent Clear Rune from mimicking Runes in Isaac's pocket. Both the consumable and rock are mimicked simultaneously, and only the greatest mimic charge is applied to Clear Rune.

  • Attempts to upgrade all enemies in the room into their stronger variants.
    • If an enemy is successfully upgraded, its health is reduced to 25% of its original value.
