Red Chain is a Passive Item added in the Repentance Update of Retribution.

Effect

  • +3 keys.
  • When entering a new room, grants a 33% chance to replace a random accessible rock with a File:RedPillar.png Red Pillar.
    • Red Pillars can be unlocked with a key to spawn a portal to a random new Red Key.png Red Key room.
      • Red Pillar portals are non-persistent and disappear if the room is left for any reason.

Notes

  • Only default rocks can be replaced.
    • This means that Tinted Rocks, Bomb Rocks, Alt Rocks, Spiked Rocks, Marked Skulls, Super Secret Rocks, Fool's Gold, Pillars, Locks, Metal Blocks, and RuneRock.gif Rune Rocks cannot be replaced.
    • Internally the game has what are known as Event Rocks, these are visually identical to normal rocks but interact with Event Buttons, these rocks also cannot be replaced.
  • Red Pillars can only replace accessible rocks, this means they will always be on the "outside" of rock clusters.
  • Red Pillars also cannot replace rocks which are adjacent to pits, as they may have utility for generating bridges to pickups or other useful objects.
    • If no accessible rocks exist, or all accessible rocks are otherwise invalidated, no Red Pillar will be generated for the current room, even if the original 33% chance passed.

Interactions

  • Red Chain Red Chain: Red Pillars are more likely to spawn.
  • Pay to Play.png Pay to Play: Red Pillars can be unlocked by spending coins instead of keys.
  • Broken Padlock.png Broken Padlock: Red Pillars can be unlocked with explosions.

Trivia

  • Red Chain is a reference to the Red Chain present in all Sinnoh region Pokémon games.
  • Red Chain's flavor text "Shackled without restraint" is a shortening of part of Cyrus' PC entries discussing the Red Chain.
    • The uncut line is as follows: "But with the Red Chain, the Pokémon can be shackled, and its power can be used without restraint..."
  • The appearance of File:RedPillar.png Red Pillars is in reference to the broken pillars at Spear Pillar from the Sinnoh region Pokémon games.
