Icarus
Icarus is a character that appeared with the initial The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ release of Retribution.
Traits
Starting Items
- Icarus starts with 2 items:
Daedalus Statue
In the starting room of every floor, a Daedalus Statue will sit in the center holding a large lit candle.
- If Icarus has lost the effect of Wax Wing and takes damage on the candle flame, there is a chance to drop a
Wax Feather.
- If Icarus has not lost the effect of Wax Wing yet, a
Pitch Feather will drop instead.
Wax Feathers restore broken
Wax Wings;
Pitch Feathers do the same but also provide a shielding layer, protecting Icarus' wings from breaking against one instance of damage.
- Icarus can't pick up
Wax Feathers if his
Wax Wings are still intact, and he can't pick up
Pitch Feathers if he already has Pitch Wings.
- The chance for a
Daedalus Statue to spawn a feather is equal to 1.5x Icarus' Curse of the Sun chance.
- This results in a 100% spawn chance at 66.6% Curse of the Sun or greater, roughly equal to Icarus' Sunburn threshold.
Notes
- In the Greed Modes, the
Daedalus Statue will appear in a custom room that replaces the
Curse Room.
- An additional room will generate on the floor attached to the Daedalus room, this is the moved Curse Room.
- On the final floor, the Daedalus Statue will appear in the center of the starting room as normal, instead of a custom room.
Curse of the Sun
Icarus has the permanent effect known as the Curse of the Sun which can cause enemies to "evolve": being replaced with harder variants related to the original enemy.
For details regarding the tree of evolutions see: Anti-Baptismal Upgrades.
Chance Modifications
- The chance for enemies to be evolved by Curse of the Sun is influenced by different actions Icarus takes during the run — "evil" actions increase this chance, while "virtuous" actions lower this chance.
- Evil Actions:
- Having Black Hearts: +2.5% each.
- Killing Angels: +10%.
- Taking Devils Deals: +5%.
- Having
The Negative: +10%.
- Virtuous Actions:
- Having an Eternal Heart: -10%.
- Killing Fallen Angels: -5%.
- Taking Angel Deals: -5%.
- Having
The Polaroid: -10%.
- Using a
Sacrifice Room: -2.5% each use.
- Evil Actions:
- Other than by having Eternal Hearts or
The Polaroid it is impossible for Icarus to reduce below his Base Curse Level. This level is:
- 25% for Normal Mode and Greed Mode.
- 35% for Hard Mode and Greedier Mode.
- If Icarus' Curse of the Sun chance exceeds 60%, he will become Sunburned.
Sunburn
Sunburn is a modifier of Curse of the Sun, which changes the behaviour of some elements of Icarus' mechanics:
Wax Wing will now leave a trail of slowing sticky creep while intact.
- Upgrading enemies have a chance to upgrade a 2nd time instantly.
- This chance is always equal to Icarus' Base Curse Level.

Trivia
- Icarus is a character in Greek mythology who was the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, and builder of the labyrinth of Crete to imprison the Minotaur.
- In various tales, after both Daedalus and his son are imprisoned by King Minos who suspected that the craftsman aided the legendary hero Theseus in escaping the labyrinth, the two of them escape through use of wings made of cloth and wax. Daedalus warns his son Icarus of over-confidence, telling him to avoid flying too close to the sun lest the wax of his wings melt. Icarus ignored Daedalus instructions, causing Icarus to plunge into the sea and drown.
- Icarus' Birthright is a reference to the "Damn the Consequences" Edict from Stellaris.
- In Stellaris, Damn the Consequences doubles the bonuses of Overtuned species traits, which are unique to the (at the time) newest species added to the game: The Toxoids.
